Traveling Home: How to Board with an eVisa?
As the UK transitions to a fully digital immigration system by 2025, visa holders must link their identity documents to their UKVI eVisa accounts by January 2025 to ensure seamless travel.
For those planning to leave the UK during the Christmas holidays, UKVI has issued a reminder to complete the identity linkage process to avoid issues when returning in the New Year. Airlines are now required to verify passengers’ eVisas or equivalent documentation before allowing boarding.
Key Updates for eVisa Travelers
Digital Clearance for Boarding:
- UKVI’s new system provides airlines with a “0A” clearance message for passengers with a valid eVisa, confirming their eligibility to travel to the UK.
- Passengers relying solely on physical documents may trigger a “0Z” or “0B” message, requiring airlines to verify the traveler’s UK entry clearance.
BRP Expiry:
- Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) will no longer be valid after 31 December 2024. However, UKVI advises retaining the BRP as a backup form of identification in case of border issues.
Accepted Physical Documents (As of 16 November 2024):While digital systems are becoming the norm, the following physical documents are still accepted during the transition period:
- Valid visa labels in passports.
- Visa vignette on Form for Affixing Visas (FAV).
- Valid UK-issued Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs).
- Valid EUSS Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs) or permits.
- Certificates of entitlement to Right of Abode in valid passports.
- EU Settlement Scheme Family Permits and Travel Permits.
- Indefinite Leave to Enter or Remain (ILE/ILR) labels or stamps in valid passports.
- Equivalent permissions issued by British Crown Dependencies.
- Border Worker Permits.
- Valid Refugee Travel Documents issued by the Home Office.
Preparing for Travel
Link Your Identity to Your eVisa:
- Log into your UKVI account and ensure your passport or other identity documents are correctly linked to your eVisa. Double-check all details for accuracy.
Check Airline Compatibility:
- Confirm with your airline that they have the capability to verify your eVisa through the UKVI system.
Retain Physical Documents:
- Even as eVisas take precedence, carrying physical documents such as a passport, BRP, or visa vignette is highly recommended to avoid delays.
Travel Guidance
- Ensure all personal details (e.g., name, passport number) match those in your eVisa account.
- If you encounter technical issues linking your identity, use the Report eVisa Error tool on the UKVI website or contact UKVI support.
- Be prepared for additional processing time at the airport if using physical documents instead of a digital eVisa.
